Membership is open to all qualified archaeologists and others who meet the criteria, who undertake to act in accordance with the ASAPA Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct and Minimum Standards of Practice, that are on par with international archaeological practice.
There are four categories of membership.
Professional
Individuals with an honours degree, or equivalent, in archaeology, who are employed in archaeology or engaged in full-time research in southern Africa at the time of application.
Technical
Individuals employed in archaeology or related fields with either an undergraduate degree (with archaeology as a major) or technical life-skill experience.
Honorary
Members of long standing or retired members who have made significant contributions to southern African archaeology or ASAPA.
Affiliate
Trained archaeologists who are not employed as such, or those in other professions who have the ability to advance research or management and who have demonstrated continued interest in southern African archaeology.
How to join
When ASAPA was established formally in 2006 all existing South African Archaeological Association (SA3) members were granted professional membership. New candidates for membership may obtain detailed application information, the appropriate application forms, Constitution, Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct, Minimum Standards of Practice and Grievance Procedures from the ASAPA website, or request these from Council.
Application details and the applicant’s CV, will be circulated amongst the members, who are given four weeks to comment or raise objections. If no objections are received, the applicant is invited to become a member. Membership will become effective on payment of the annual subscription fee.
